Bulk shirt orders make sense for student organizations in a narrow set of scenarios: retiring officer keepsakes the chapter funds, new-member welcome packs given out at orientation, and sponsored event tees where a sponsor pays for shirts to give away. For everything else, individual ordering wins. Below is the framework for when to bulk-order and when to let members buy direct, with the math on both.

When Bulk Order Wins

Three scenarios:

When Individual Orders Win

Identity tees, hoodies, fundraiser tees, alumni pieces, and any product the org wants to sell over time. With no minimum, individual orders skip the size-collection spreadsheet entirely, never leave the chapter holding unsold stock, and let new members order at any time during the year.

Same Per-Unit Price At Any Volume

Important to note: the catalog base price is identical at any volume. The Airlume Cotton Tee is $23.93 Free ($19.88 VIP) whether the org orders 1 or 200. There is no quantity discount. Conversely, there is no quantity penalty either. The chapter can run individual orders all year and bulk-order specific batches when needed without the math changing.

Mixing Bulk and Individual In The Same Shop

The same shop supports both models. The chapter advisor can place a single bulk order for 20 welcome tees in standard sizes, while individual members continue to order the identity tee on their own. The store dashboard tracks bulk and individual orders separately for revenue accounting.

Bulk Order Math For The Chapter

For a 20-unit new-member welcome tee bulk order on the VIP plan ($19.88 base each), the chapter's cash outlay is $397.60. If the chapter charges new members $20 of their initiation fee toward the tee, the order is fully cost-recovered. If the chapter funds it as a welcome gesture, the $397.60 is a chapter expense (often justified by retention math: visible org identity from day one of new-member orientation).

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every org bulk-order new member shirts?

Most do not. The cost-benefit only works for chapters with a structured initiation fee or for orgs prioritizing visible day-one onboarding. Many orgs let new members order their own identity tee individually instead.

Can sponsors pay for bulk event shirts?

Yes. The chapter places the bulk order, the sponsor pays the chapter directly for the cost. The chapter handles the order and distribution.

Do bulk orders ship to one address?

Yes. Bulk orders ship to a single chapter or advisor address. Individual orders ship to each member.

How fast does a bulk order arrive?

About one week from order placement. Same printing and shipping cycle as individual orders.
