Screen printed no-gi BJJ academy shirts are the default for tees, hoodies, and any design that covers more than a small chest area. Print handles color flexibility, photo detail, and large back designs in ways that embroidery cannot match. For the majority of academy apparel, print is the right answer. Reserve embroidery for structured pieces like hats and polos.
When Print Beats Embroidery
Five categories where print is the default:
- Tees. Cotton, performance, and triblend tees all carry print better than embroidery. The fabric weight is too light for embroidery to sit cleanly without puckering.
- Hoodies with large back designs. A back design that spans 12 inches across or more cannot be embroidered economically. Print handles this in one pass.
- Multi-color logos with gradients. Embroidery handles flat-color logos well. Gradients, photo detail, and unlimited color counts belong on print.
- Tournament walkout shirts. Often feature event names, dates, and graphics that change per event. Print handles these short-run designs cost-effectively.
- Kids program shirts. Youth tees carry print cleanly and at the right price point for parents buying for kids who outgrow apparel quickly.
Print Methods Used in Academy Apparel
The two main print methods used across the academy shop:
- Screen print. Ink pushed through a mesh stencil onto the fabric. Stands up to many washes, soft hand on lightweight cotton, slightly thicker hand on darker bases. The default for large solid-color designs.
- DTF (direct to film) transfer. A printed film applied to the fabric with heat. Holds fine detail and full-color photo-style designs in ways screen print cannot. Slightly different hand-feel but very durable across washes. The right call for multi-color logos and gradient designs.
You do not have to choose the method manually. The platform routes the print method based on the design and the garment. You upload your academy logo or design and the right print method is applied at fulfillment.
Design Placement on Tees and Hoodies
| Placement | Typical Use | Best Style Match |
|---|---|---|
| Left chest | Small logo, clean lifestyle look | Tees, polos, lightweight hoodies |
| Full front center | Large logo, statement piece | Tees, hoodies, walkout shirts |
| Back center upper | Academy name and logo across the shoulders | Hoodies, training tees |
| Full back | Large graphic, event design, sponsor list | Tournament walkout shirts, premium hoodies |
| Sleeve hit | Number, secondary logo, small text | Tees, long sleeves |
The standard academy combo: full-front or left-chest logo on the front, larger academy name and logo on the back center upper. Reads cleanly from across the academy lobby and from across the tournament venue.

Start FreeFrequently Asked Questions
Is there a print setup fee?
No. Print setup is included in the per-piece VIP base price. There is no separate setup fee, and no minimum quantity. A single tee order prints with the same setup as a bulk order.
Can I print a multi-color or gradient design?
Yes. DTF transfer handles full-color, gradient, and photo-style designs cleanly. Upload your design as is and the right print method is applied at fulfillment.
How durable is print on academy shirts?
Screen print and DTF both hold up across many washes when garments are washed inside-out in cold water and air-dried or tumble-dried low. Most academy shirts retain their print integrity for years of regular wear.
Can I print front and back on the same tee?
Yes. Front and back print is supported on tees, hoodies, and most apparel. Upload both designs and assign placement during product setup. The Done-For-You VIP plan includes front and back mockups on every product as part of the monthly setup.
