If you have a bouldering gym day pass coming up, the dress code is simple: stretchy bottoms, a fitted top, and athletic shoes for the walk in. The gym rents climbing shoes and a chalk bag at the front desk. Here is the first-timer checklist of what to wear, what to leave at home, and what most gyms now sell as branded gear if you want to bring something home.

The First-Timer Outfit Checklist

Rent at the front desk:

You do not need any technical climbing gear for your first session. The gym handles it all.

What Happens at the Front Desk

Every first-time visit follows roughly the same flow:

  1. Sign a waiver (sometimes online, sometimes at the desk)
  2. Watch a short safety video or get a quick walk-through from staff
  3. Rent climbing shoes (one size below your street size is typical for snug fit)
  4. Get a quick intro to the grading system at that gym (V grades)
  5. Head into the bouldering area and start on the easy walls

Most gyms have a "first day" deal that includes shoe rental, chalk, and the day pass for a flat price. Ask at the desk.

After the First Session: When to Upgrade

If you come back for a second session, the upgrade path is short:

  1. Climbing-specific pants or shorts. The gusseted crotch makes a noticeable difference after one session.
  2. Your own chalk bag and chalk. Cheaper than renting every visit.
  3. Your own climbing shoes. After your fourth or fifth session, gym rentals start to feel sloppy.
  4. A branded gym tee or hoodie. Optional, but most regulars grab one within their first month.

If your gym sells branded apparel, the tee is the easiest first piece. Most cost $25 to $35, ship in about a week, and signal you are becoming a regular.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear to my first bouldering session?

Stretch pants or shorts, a fitted tee or tank, and athletic shoes for the walk in. The gym rents climbing shoes. Skip jeans, jewelry, and baggy hoodies.

Do I need to buy climbing shoes before my first visit?

No. Every bouldering gym rents climbing shoes. Most charge $5 to $8 per session. After 4 or 5 sessions, most climbers buy their own.

Can I wear leggings to bouldering?

Yes. Leggings work well for bouldering as long as the waistband stays put during inversions. High-waist leggings are the most common choice for women.
